The Brownie baking badge

“I wrote out the method, ingredients and why I chose to make these cakes and the theme, all by myself”

Being part of Girlguiding is giving the opportunity to girls to try something new and exciting. We have a diverse programme providing girls with an array of skills and experiences through regular meetings to interest badges that can be completed at home. These interest badges range from photography, dancing to construction.

The best part is that girls can choose which interest badges they complete.

One of our Brownies from the Worthing area, Isabelle aged 7 recently completed her part 1 of 2 activities for her Baking Badge.

“I did all the measuring and mixing by myself, and decorated them with a Space theme, using blue buttercream and smarties to look like planets, and silver balls to look like stars.”

Isabelle wrote out the method, ingredients, and reason she chose these cakes and the theme all by herself and had them already in her Brownie bag to show Brown Owl.

“I love space so much and was very excited to make my cakes look like this.”

This is the first time Isabelle is doing an Interest Badge at home and enjoyed making the cakes and is looking forward to achieve Part 3 ‘Story Bake’ in a couple of weeks’ time.

Learning life skills

One of the great parts of the girls taking part in badges at home is that they gain new skills for life. This was proof when Isabell’s mum gave us an update of some fantastic Halloween cakes she made for a party.

“She made the mixture herself, chose the colour of the buttercream and arranged the cut pieces of cake to look like the hat and the nose of the witch. She then used a couple of sweets to make the eye and a smile – because she is a happy witch – and finished it off with some plastic spiders.”
